This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Ignore the "Some twists" that I had to post above - not sure why Amazon insisted I check something off in that box before allowing me to write a review, but the question itself was inappropriate, this isn't the type of book that contains twists or not! That said, I read this book because I saw others referencing it in works I appreciated, mentioning how they had commenced a reading journey driven by the wisdom of this book, suggesting it had shaped their journey, and their intellectual growth in genuinely useful ways, so I was curious.

One must be prepared, when diving into this book: It was written long ago, and that shows in the prose, and in certain religious references, and educational and political ones, as well. However, it is a very well-crafted examination of the Art of Reading, and contains some genuine gems, definitely worth the effort of mining from this dusty work of long ago. I read it on the cloud reader, and so I did not experience the issues with small print that others encountered. If you don't mind reading it on your computer, that may be the solution to the print issue others have complained of.

On The Art Of Reading Arthur Quiller Couch Books Reviews

This is one of two books by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch used by Helene Hanff as the foundation of her education as a writer. Many people educate themselves who cannot afford education by reading all they can. My mother did not finish the eighth grade but knew more about American History and literature than most college kids today because she had a solid foundation of learning from an old fashioned teacher in a one room school house and a lifelong practice of reading.

Many may find this book dated and no doubt boring if possessed by a mind incurious of the literature of their country's language. However, there is no substitute for the motivation provided by a master of the language.
Very literary and detailed. NOT a fast read.
Type is so small, need a magnifier to read!
Ever go to a yard sale or antique shop, and see something, and touch it, and know that you were touching the past? I encourage anyone who loves reading to read this book. When you do, you will be "touching the past" and getting a unique perspective not seen in modern writing.

This book is a series of lectures written by a professor of literature. It was written about 100 years ago, which puts it around the time of WWI (The Great War). Tolkien and Lewis may very well have even been familiar with the author.

The book is a series of critiques on how literature is taught. If I remember right, he begins by critiquing how children are taught. Then goes on to how colleges, especially the more established and revered ones, might be missing something in how they go about handling literature, the exam system, etc. He talks about the Bible as literature. In the course of discussing the Bible he points out the power of non-rhythmic poetry, citing the book of Job. He compares the book of Job to several other classics as examples (Prometheus Bound, I think).

In one instance, he makes allusion to a piece of classical music 'The Lark Ascending' which was composed during that time period. It was a very subtle allusion, though, and easy to miss. You get the feeling, as you read it, that you are sitting in on these lectures, or maybe that you are a bird just outside his open window watching him prepare the lectures as he puffs on a pipe (I'm using my imagination here I know but) it is a great way to get the feeling of history by reading such books.
BEWARE!! I just received my copy and find the print so small and grey that I wish I had "looked inside" - as I now see it is possible to do before adding a book to my cart. It's almost illegible.
Only the cover is attractive. I am very disappointed, but I see no publisher listed and wonder who in the world prints such an inaccessible book. Where does it come from?
I'd like to return this for another edition and will call to find out if I can do that.
The book is brilliant as is everything by the author. The problem is the incredibly tiny print which makes it almost impossible to read. I wish that there had been a warning. I now have to buy a magnifying glass to lay over the page in order to read it comfortably. I do wear glasses but I have never had this problem with any other book that I have owned. I continue to buy books and this problem isn't happening anywhere else. Very disappointing.
